Story

Lee Denton is Running the Great South Run & NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT!

Firstly thank you for taking the time to read this and considering sponsoring me.  I’m running the Great South Run on 25th October 2009 in the hope that I can raise money for The National Autistic Society.

Autism is a brain disorder that affects a great many children and adults with varying degrees of impact.  Family life is the obvious area which many people think of as being affected but the shock waves follow through to school, social environments and later the working life and relationships.  How many times have you seen a child screaming in the supermarket or running round and round in circles flapping their hands in the shopping centre?  Rather than thinking ‘what on earth are they doing’ with a frown on your face, try considering the possibility that they may be Autistic.

I speak here from experience as this is a subject very close to my heart.  Two of my children have diagnosed Autistic Spectrum Disorders and frequently we have to deal with the frowns and’ tuts’ of people who do not understand what that child is going through.

Every second of every day is a struggle for a child or adult with Autism.  Trying to make sense of the world in which we live is very daunting for these people and even in sleep it doesn’t stop.  By raising money and awareness, life can be made easier by providing the correct levels of support at critical times for those directly affected and their families.

I feel blessed to have my children and get through the good and bad times with laughter and hope (plus the ‘occasional’ beer or two!).  They don’t have ‘special skills’ or ‘fabulous IQs’, this is reality not the Rain Man film!  I’m lucky in that my wife and I have support from each other and those around us but some are not so fortunate.  Families need extra help and without funding, the research that has done so much to help those affected by Autism will cease.  If you are able to sponsor me for this run the money raised would help The National Autistic Society continue to make a positive difference to even more people affected by Autism.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

So please dig deep and donate now even if it's just £1.00, it all makes a difference.

Thanks for your support and don’t forget to wish me luck on the day :)
