Story

Hi everyone :) I am doing my European Voluntary Service in Marske by the sea, a small village at the north eastern coast of Great Britain. Since last October I have been working here at the Leonard Cheshire Home "Marske Hall”, a care home for adults with physical disabilities, and I already feel like being at home. When the sun is shining I love to run along the coast and just disconnect my brain with the beautiful view over the sea. Until now the only purpose of my running was relaxing and getting some fresh air and energy into my body.
One of the most amazing things I experienced here at Marske Hall is the fundraising work they do. With several events like craft fairs, car washes etc. they manage to raise thousands of pounds per year and a great amount of local volunteers puts lots of time and energy in those activities. The money they raise goes directly to the care home and improves the quality of lives of the people living here immensely. They organize day trips; buy things for the daily activities, for example a multi-sensory-room which they recently ordered, and go on holidays.

The passion of people for charity and voluntary work here in the UK, which seems much bigger and more common than in Germany, impresses me a lot. I think it is a great way to spend your free time and contribute to something useful and after a while living in this surrounding there came up the wish of mine to also play a part in it. Therefore when I heard about a girl from work running the London Marathon and read about the Great North Run it was perfectly clear for me that I should register for this big event in Newcastle and try to raise as much money as possible. It was always a dream on my once-in-a-life-to-do-list to run a half-marathon/marathon. And what is a better way of doing this than combining it with charity work?

So here comes your part: while I work hard on improving my running ability with the aim to survive these 13 miles (hopefully in an appropriate time) I count on you to donate some money and help me reaching my target of £350.
