As many of you know 2 years ago when I was 12 weeks pregnant, myself and my husband were devastated to receive news that our unborn baby was very seriously poorly. It was our routine 12 week scan, we weren't expecting it at all, our hearts were shattered.
After deciding to undergo some testing we found out our unborn DAUGHTER had Turner syndrome. We had never heard of it before, but we had genetic counselling and we knew we could give her the best life. She could live a normal life. But.... We had to get her here first, her chances of surviving to birth were 2 per cent.
But Bella, well she had other ideas....
On the 14th July 2015 our brave and beautiful daughter was born by emergency c section. It truly was the most amazing and terrifying moment ever. She had made it, she was here.
Bella was monitored in the neonatal unit for 6 days where it was confirmed that she had a narrowing in her aorta. She had an echo every day and as the days went by the doctors seemed fairly happy that she wouldn't need any surgery.. amazing news we were heading towards home!!
Her monitors were taken down and she spent her first night by my bed side. I was so happy. The next morning her cardiologist came to do another echo, his words will haunt me forever 'we need to transfer Bella by ambulance to Bristol today for a cardiac review, it is very likely she will need open heart surgery'
My world crumbled in that moment. I've never been more terrified.
Me and Gary drove to Bristol and met Bella in the emergency department where the consultant did an echo and confirmed that she was going to need open heart surgery asap to survive. We were both beside ourselves. They moved Bella onto the intensive care unit where she was to stay for the next 6 days.
They started her on a drug to open the duct in her heart, they needed to up the dose and a side effect of this was that she could stop breathing. So on the Tuesday morning they ventilated and sedated Bella.
Thursday morning 23rd July 2015 our beautiful, tiny, 6 pound baby was wheeled off to theatre, where a surgeon stopped her heart.
I can't even describe the pain that you feel handing your baby over to a stranger. We were terrified. Would we ever see her again??
But we needn't have been. The surgeon who operated on Bella was one of the most amazing people I have ever met. He cut away the narrow part of her aorta and rejoined it. He saved our daughters life.
And here is why I am being crazy and signing up to a half marathon when i am seriously unfit.
Every single member of staff at Bristol children's hospital went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. Nothing was ever too much.
The care that Bella received from the nurses and doctors in Picu was like no other. They were like angels sent to look after her and us. They made a very horrific time much more bearable.
Without the fantastic care that Bella received at Bristol children's hospital, she WOULD NOT BE HERE TODAY! I will never ever be able to put into words how grateful I am to her surgeon who fixed her heart. The nurses who kept her alive.
But if I can just give something back by raising some money for such an amazing cause then I will be so happy.
Please please if you can sponsor me to run this half marathon. I never thought I would need the care of this hospital but I did and now I want to give back.i would be so grateful for any donations.
I am dedicating this run to my inspirational daughter who is a fighter, a miracle and a heart warrior. Thank you for reading xxxxx
