Story
The people who make our clothes live in extreme poverty thanks to low wages paid by fashion brands. Most do not have enough money to meet their basic needs (rent, bills and food for their kids) despite working excessive overtime.
Secrecy across the industry means nobody is holding fashion brands accountable for the exploitation in the factories they use. Working conditions are incredibly unsafe - thousands of people have died while at work or face physical or verbal abuse. Slavery is also a serious problem, particularly in cotton. 1 in 5 items of cotton is linked to forced labour.
Women get paid less and so do people working from home, often getting paid per garment rather than hourly. This is made worse by fast fashion’s drive to get products into retail faster and faster to satisfy an unappeasable desire for new trends.
!!! Our collective consumption habits must change and we must stand in solidarity with garment workers. !!!
I am doing a “fast fashion fast” to raise awareness of the human rights abuses in fashion supply chains. You can help the cause by donating to Labour Behind The Label, a not-for-profit who is campaigning for transparency, living wages and human rights for garment workers.
Wearing 6 items of clothing (not including underwear, shoes or accessories) for 6 weeks will be harder than it sounds with 2 messy young children (I’m also really good at spilling my dinner down myself, haha).
I appreciate your support <3
