Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Dear Friends,

I hope you are all well and enjoying the beginning of summer.

This summer I plan to take part in a Raleigh International expedition where I will spend 5 weeks in Borneo. During this expedition I will be working on various environmental and community challenges, plus participate in an adventure challenge.

This expedition will physically and mentally challenge me whilst also helping me gain personal development skills which will help me in work environments when I am older such as leadership, teamwork and mental resilience. This is not the only positive outcome I will get from this expedition but in addition I will be able to expand my knowledge of environmental management and studies (a subject I hope to study at university) whilst working in a developing country. I will take part in a reforestation project and help build a safe habitat for the Sun Bears (the smallest bear species in the world, currently becoming extinct). For community work I will be building kindergartens and primary schools (as some children have to walk for hours to get to the closest school) and also better quality housing for the local families. I would tell you about my adventure week, but it is top secret and not even I know what is going to happen, but all I have been told is that it will push me to my limits. Living amongst the local communities in the rain forest, with only a tent, torch and mosquito net for creature comforts, this will also pose a challenge for someone like me – hooked on my regular hot showers and body lotions and potions!

I have always had a passion towards the environment, however my old biology teacher (Mr Hall) really opened my eyes and made me see the world in a different light, showing me how we all live on something so precious and that sustainable development is vital. In addition, my brother Jacob is the most important thing to me and I want him to grow up on a safe and healthy planet, where natural hazards and global warming are not constantly occurring and I am sure you want the same for the children in your families.

I know that I alone cannot save the planet but hope by participating in this expedition it will give me an insight, the inspiration and the confidence to take this learning experience and use it to improve my chances to get on to a good environmental management course at university. In my life time I aim to make people aware of what is going on around us and in the hope that, in time, the quality of peoples’ lives will improve. Part of this expedition involves fundraising, so I will be packing supermarket bags, organising bake sales and car washes but am also hoping that you would consider sponsoring me and turning my dream into a reality. If you are able to help me, please get in touch and I will give you details of the Just Giving page I will be setting up, or alternative payment details.

I will also plan to keep you updated with how the expedition goes, along with photos etc.

Thank you,

Lauren :) xxx
