I'm taking on the Aspire Channel Swim 2017, swimming the distance of the Channel (22 miles) over 12 weeks in my local pool, to raise money for Aspire. Every eight hours someone is paralysed by a Spinal Cord Injury and Aspire provides the essential equipment, advice, housing and grants that spinal cord injured people need to live their lives independently.
Before I was born my Dad was in a life-threatening car accident and came out of it with a broken back but luckily his spinal cord was intact. Due to months of physio and recovery he is able to walk again however changes to our surroundings and big changes to his life have been made to help ease the pain and aide in his recovery.
After the accident, he spent several months in Stoke Mandeville spinal unit and saw the devastating effects of spinal cord injury. Most of these people will never walk again, and my dad was one of the lucky ones.
There is currently no cure for spinal cord injury and it can happen to anyone at any time so I am raising money for Aspire to give those with spinal cord injury the practical help they need.
This is a big challenge, but the more I raise, the more of a difference I'll make, so please be generous!
