Story
My aim is to walk 400,000 steps during Lent to raise money for York Special Care Baby Unit Support Group who supported us following the premature birth of our son.
Our son, Hayden, was born 11 weeks early and subsequently spent 7 weeks in York Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) finally being discharged and allowed to come home on Boxing Day 2021.
Those 7 weeks were an emotional rollercoaster and we couldn’t have got through it without the support of all of the nurses in SCBU.
The support group do a huge variety of work to support all of the families in SCBU, too many things to list. A snapshot of their support that we experienced - we spent Christmas Day in SCBU and the support group organised gifts for all of the babies on the ward. Our final 5 days in SCBU were spent staying in the bedsit in the SCBU ward which had recently been refurbished by the group.
“The object of the Group is the relief, care and treatment of premature and sick new born babies in the Special Care Baby Unit at York Hospital, by providing and assisting in the provision of specialised medical or surgical equipment and improved amenities and facilities including education and vocational training.”
