Story
On 24th July I am hiking 32km across the South West in support of Galgos Del Sol, an amazing charity that rehabilitates and rehomes Galgos and Podencos who have been abandoned or escaped from brutal living conditions.
This hike isn’t going to be easy, so hear me out! :) It’s tough, varied, and part of the South West Ultra Challenge 2021. With almost 1,100 metres of climb, we start at Minehead, making our way through Exmoor with a climb up Dunkery Beacon. We then descend across moorland and farmland to the finish line in Dulverton. Phew!
A bit more about the cause… Rescuing Galgos and Podencos is a challenging, unpredictable and often dangerous undertaking. They are bred for hunting, not as pets, and thousands are killed or abandoned every year. An abandoned dog that has been living rough may have to be observed and coaxed with food for weeks and sometimes months before it will allow a human near. GDS has rescued dogs that have been thrown into wells, lying injured in fields, tossed into dumpsters, run scared in traffic, given birth on a roadside and left to die in abandoned breeding camps. A Galgo or Podenco sighting may occur at anytime in Spain so GDS is always on call.
