Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page, I'd like to tell you more about how Ronald McDonald House Manchester supported my family recently.
My nephew Lukas was the same as any other 2 year old, he loved running around, playing with his friends, had a passion for Thomas the Tank Engine and loved life. On the 27th March 2013 he was diagnosed with medullablastoma, a highly malignant and aggressive cancer that had already spread around his head and spine. Lukas was transferred from Bolton Hospital to Manchester Childrens Hospital for his treatment of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Whilst Lukas was in hospital facilities were available for his Daddy to stay with him, and Ronald McDonald House provided on site accommodation for his Mummy and sister Violet.
In mid August Lukas was growing in strength and a scan showed the cancer had almost cleared. Sadly on the 2nd September 2013 his symptoms were returning and Lukas was visibly worsening. A new scan showed the cancer, which 2 weeks ago was almost gone, had returned. There was nothing else which could be done. On 12th October 2013 at 1pm, Lukas passed away in his home surrounded by his family and beloved baby sister.
Throughout his time in hospital Ronald McDonald House was a home away from home for Lukas - he couldn't wait to get over to their playrooms, bursting with toys to find his favourite train Arthur. It was a place where he could go to meet and play with his friends in happy homely surroundings, and eat with his family in the kitchens provided. The house is located right next door to the childrens hospital so parents can be there at a moments notice. The workers and volunteers at the house do their upmost to help parents and families in any way and take a genuine interest in families, and always made Lukas feel special. They host weekly craft sessions, waffle Wednesdays and film Fridays to help raise spirits and provide a break from the monotony.
A room has been sponsored in Lukas' memory as a lasting legacy, and a plaque to acknowledge his sponsorship has been placed outside the room. It reads -
This room is sponsored by the friends and family of Lukas Proud - an inspiration to us all.
