A little about why we are fundraising for this worthy cause……
3 days after returning from our honeymoon towards the end of April this year, my husband Rob was diagnosed with cancer. To say the news was a complete shock to us all would be an understatement. Rob had been having pain in his hip for about 7 weeks at this point; he had visited the local NHS walk in centre and had a visit to his GP. It was thought he had bursitis of the hip so took the appropriate treatment for that. With the pain not having improved, another visit to the GP then saw him being sent to A&E for scans and later on that day we found out the true diagnosis.
In a whirlwind couple of weeks, Rob had many more scans and tests and was then under the care of Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Liverpool. His consultant informed us that Rob had a germ cell tumour. In mid-May, he started his first cycle of chemotherapy.
Through the first few weeks of chemotherapy, Rob had a few extra obstacles to contend with - they were tough times that included developing a blood clot and A&E admissions for a septicaemia infection and vasovagal episodes. It still seems a little surreal that I’m writing this and setting up a fundraising page. It’s crazy what life throws at you at times, but Rob has been so strong. I’m so proud of him!
This charity was already in our hearts as Rob’s Dad had treatment at Clatterbridge too a few years ago, so we wanted to fundraise to do our part and give back to this amazing centre that we are so lucky to have access to on our doorstep. As Rob is a keen cyclist, it seemed fitting for me to gather a group of family and friends together to all participate in Clatterbridge’s upcoming charity cycle ride in August. By this point in time, Rob will be on his fifth cycle of treatment.
So, that’s our whirlwind story, and we would love to raise as much money as we can whilst cycling for Clatterbridge!
