So I'm doing the Jurassic Coast Challenge! At least, the First Quarter, 24km/15 miles from Poole to Norden Farm near Corfe. I enjoy walking but my experience is mostly limited to easy-going Sunday strolls of a couple of hours. I haven't done a hike of this length or difficulty before - it's a pretty hilly route apparently! It will be a challenge but one that I'm very excited about.
I've decided to raise money for the mental health charity Mind because, although I've only recently recognised it for what it is and been diagnosed, I've been dealing with depression and anxiety for about ten years now, the worst of which was the last half of 2018.
Mental health issues may be invisible but they’re just as real as physical ones, and present just as much of a hurdle in doing and dealing with the myriad of tiny everyday challenges. Even the simplest things - like getting out of bed, going to the shop to get some decent food for dinner, and saying more than just hello to someone - can take a huge amount of effort, leaving you with little or no energy to face and deal with other everyday things which require more concentration, patience, and resilience. Let alone life's bigger challenges.
I wish I'd known about Mind earlier. They offer information to everyone, including training courses, trying to raise awareness and understanding, which is so, so important. Of course they also offer vital advice and support for those of us struggling with our mental health, and to our friends, families and employers. They also run Elefriends, a supportive online community where people can talk about whatever's going on for them right now, a safe space to share and be heard.
Thank you very much for visiting this page, and donating if you do =] Any amount is very much appreciated! Now for the automated bit they add in...
