Story
Starting on the 1st of September Retail Development will be walking, running, cycling, swimming and rowing 4,456 miles to raise money for PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease.). We believe that efforts of one person can’t move mountains. It’s the strength of us all working together that can make a change
PKD as a charity raises awareness of the disease, funds new research to stop the progression (and hopefully one day prevention) and most importantly offers support to those who already live with PKD. PKD is an inherited disease where cysts grow on both kidneys and overtime leads to a loss in Kidney function. This means by the time that half of all people living with PKD turn 60 they will develop kidney failure and would require a kidney transplant. There are a number of other health issues PKD can cause such as UTI’s, Polycystic Liver disease, Aneurysms and high blood pressure to name a few. PKD is the world's most common inherited life-threatening condition and it affects up to 70,000 people in the UK alone.
In our team, it effects Bri;
“In 2019 I found out I have inherited PKD from my Dad. My dad sadly passed away in 2008 at the age of 58. He died of a heart attack. This was partly due to the strain that dialysis had put on his body over the 6 years he had waited for a kidney transplant after living with PKD since his mid twenties. Finding out I have the same disease 10 years later impacted me mentally more than physically at that point. Now I have yearly consultations and blood tests to monitor the rate in which my Kidney function is reducing and aside
It has taken me some time to understand what it means for my life and what I can do to help slow down the process. The truth is without research there aren’t too many choices I can make to help. Keeping fit and healthy for me becomes a little more important than before which is why I’m really thankful my team want to help raise money by staying active. We are completing 4,456 miles which is the returning distance between the Uk and Cyprus. This is in memory of my Dad who was Greek-Cypriot.”
Your support is so appreciated; a big thank you from us all 😊
