Story
Thanks for supporting my fundraising. At Macmillan, we give people with cancer everything we’ve got. If you’re diagnosed, your worries are our worries. We’re doing whatever it takes. But without your help we can’t support everyone who needs us.
Macmillan have been invaluable in supporting my mum, currently suffering from cancer, and my father in law who sadly passed away from lung cancer. Running a marathon is not something I would ever have considered until a few years ago. In 2014 I discovered I had a BRCA1 gene mutation, meaning my chances of developing breast cancer were up to 72% and my chances of developing ovarian cancer up to 44%. Since then I have taken preventative action by having a double mastectomy and reconstruction and an oopherectomy (removal of ovaries, which put me into menopause at 34).
I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to take preventative action to limit my chances of developing cancer. I am running this marathon to show my body what it can do - a big FU to the cancer causing gene!
I am one of the lucky ones. But there are so many who are not so fortunate and who rely on the incredible services of Macmillan. If you can donate anything at all I can promise you the people at Macmillan will put it to the best use. And for my part I promise to train hard and do my absolute best for your donations.
