Fundraising for Young Roots
All being well, I'll be running my first ever marathon in at the end of May. Partly to overcome the humiliation of a little boy saying to his Mum, as I puffed past on a 20 minute jog around Wandsworth Common a few months back, "Mum, why's that lady got such a red face?". And then, when I was a few steps ahead, "Mum, I can still hear that lady's loud breathing". I can do better than this, I thought.
But that's not the only reason I'm doing it. I'm fundraising for the charity that I'm a trustee of, Refugee Youth Project. We're going from strength to strength, with new work off the ground in Croyden as well as Barnet, doing everything from support groups for young refugee mums to film-making projects for refugee school kids. Our work in Nepal continues; our weekly activity sessions are still the only chance that most young refugees have to pause domestic or paid work and experience childhood as it should be. In Lebanon, the Palestinian refugee camps have seen thousands of new arrivals from Syria - people now twice displaced - and we hope to provide what support we can in our project this summer.
With another £500+, we'll be able to do much more. And as a volunteer-led organisation, we can guarantee that nearly every penny will go directly into the activities for the young refugees.
So thanks for considering sponsoring me... and wish me luck!
