Story
This is something I’ve been planning for a couple of weeks, before the announcement that zoos could reopen, from the 15th June, was made.
Although zoos are now able to open, many aren’t ready to do so (due to being unable to implement the social distancing and safety measures required until a clear idea of when they could reopen was in place) and those that are have already suffered such financial loss that it will be a while before they’re ‘in the clear’.
Banham Zoo is one of these zoos. They, and their partner site Africa Alive, both had their applications for the Government Zoo grant turned down, and the bank loan they were able to secure has to be repaid within six years and not the 25 they asked for. They’ve already suffered an approximate £1.5million loss and so, despite being able to reopen soon, still need additional help and support to ensure they’re able to continue providing high-quality animal care and supporting their external conservation projects around the world. It will also mean they don’t have to close their doors for good.
Unlike the amazing fundraising efforts for Chester Zoo, these much smaller zoos haven’t had the same publicity to help them reach their fundraising targets.
So, because of this, I’ve decided to try and help raise whatever money I can by cycling 500 miles in one month.
This may not seem a lot for some people but considering I’ve probably cycled a grand total of 80 miles in the last 5 years, cycling 500 miles in 31 days is going to be a massive challenge.
I know there’s a lot of fundraisers happening at the moment but any donation, whether it be 50p or £50, would be hugely appreciated.
I love Banham zoo and the work they do, so hopefully my suffering will mean their animals won’t have to.
