Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. A little about why we are fundraising for this worthy cause……

In April 2022, my husband Rob was diagnosed with cancer. To say the news was a complete shock to us all would be an understatement. Rob had been having pain in his hip for about 7 weeks at this point; he had visited the local NHS walk in centre and had a visit to his GP. It was thought he had bursitis of the hip so took the appropriate treatment for that. With the pain not having improved, another visit to the GP then saw him being sent to A&E for scans and later on that day we found out the true diagnosis.

In a whirlwind couple of weeks, Rob had many more scans and tests and was then under the care of Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Liverpool. His consultant informed us that Rob specifically had testicular cancer - a germ cell tumour located near his hip which had also metastasized to the liver. Two weeks after his initial diagnosis, Rob started his first of five consecutive cycles of chemotherapy. Through the months of chemotherapy, Rob encountered extra obstacles to contend with including a blood clot, septicaemia infection and vasovagal episodes.

Rob’s fifth cycle of chemotherapy finished in August, after having a very positive effect on bringing his tumour markers down. Nevertheless, the chemotherapy had not “melted away” the entirety of the physical mass of the cancer so in November Rob underwent an intense 8-hour long surgery at The Royal Liverpool to remove the remaining masses. After a nervous wait for family through the day, the surgery was a success. After 4 days in intensive care post-surgery,  Rob was discharged from hospital just the very next day. He had done amazingly well in such a short space of time!

On the Friday before Christmas 2022, Rob received a phone call with his post-op blood and scan results. His tumour markers were now within “normal” range and he was given the “clear”. The best news we could have all wished for in time for Christmas :-)

It’s crazy what life throws at you at times, but things like this show you the importance of your nearest and dearest. Rob has been so strong throughout it all, I’m so proud of him and I’m so happy to see him going from strength to strength - spending time with family and friends, back to work, getting back on his bike and going on holidays again.

We would love to raise as much money as we can whilst cycling for Clatterbridge, giving our small bit back to such an amazing place that does such incredible things.
