Story
22/9/22: We did it! Painful at times, but fabulously rewarding otherwise, we crossed the line together after 5 very tough days.
We will no doubt bore you with our stories over the months ahead. In the meantime, THANK YOU for your support. We have also now hit our fund-raising target. hip-hip-hooray x3
13/8/22: It's now just a month until we attempt our challenge. We have been lugging back-packs around in heat-wave conditions ... ideal preparation for what awaits us in Kenya.
Thank you to all our supporters. All contributions gratefully received and allocated to support the fight against poaching.
None of us ever intended to attempt an Ultra-Marathon. It was never on our bucket list of challenges. But when our friend Cathy, the leader of Save the Rhino, told us about this challenge and its goals, we had to say YES.
Our fund-raising effort will help support the rangers who face a constant battle to protect wildlife from poachers. Rhinos are especially at risk.
Some of the funds we collect will cover life insurance premiums for the rangers. This may not sound particularly glamourous: but when you learn that over 1,000 rangers have been killed in the line of duty since 2003, you realise that this cover is genuinely important to the families and local communities. The rest of the funds will cover kit, welfare and other more immediate needs.
Our 2020 challenge was amongst the benign green fields of Hampshire and Berkshire. With the Kenyan 2022 event now looming, we can look forward to experiencing raw nature in the wild. Along the route will be rhinos, elephants, lions, buffalo, zebra, impala and giraffe. The thought of coming face to face with creatures that would want to eat us will distract us from the discomfort of completing 230km under the baking African sun.
