Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Alopecia is a hair-loss disease that affects men, women and children. The onset is often sudden, random and frequently recurrent. Although not damaging to physical health, alopecia can have severe effects on quality of life and emotional health through its impact on confidence and self-esteem. Information and support, however, can play a key role in long-term coping strategies.

I have had Alopecia Areata since the age of 14.  Initially my patches were small and easy to cover, they would appear for approximately 6 months then slowly return.  In September 2012 I started losing my hair again, however this time the loss was much more severe.

I have tried many things to encourage re-growth from Coconut Oil to Steroid injections with a varying degrees of success.  I was not allowed to attempt Immunosuppression due to Thyroid Cancer I was recovering from in 2013.

After going to the Alopecia UK 10th Anniversary event at Alton Towers and meeting so many other people with the same condition I finally felt confident to completely shave my head.

I choose to wear either a headscarf of wig most of the time, both are ok but nothing feels as good as going Au Natural.  In support of National Alopecia Awareness Month this September my task is to shed the headwear from the 1st September to the 5th September.  And who knows if I all goes well maybe the whole of September!

This is a very big personal challenge for me as for the past two years very few people have seen me without my headscarves.

If you would like to donate anything, even just 50p toward Alopecia UK so we can help raise awareness of this condition that would be great.  Not only will it aid the charity it will also give me a massive boost in confidence to know you are supporting me.

Thanks

Laura
