Story
Sri Lanka is currently experiencing a socio-economic crisis
of devastating proportions – Political instability, inflation, food insecurity,
threatened livelihoods and shortages of vital and essential medicines has left
the health and wellbeing of women and girls at serious risk.
As the cost of food climbs to a record 90%, the UN
estimates 6.3 million people are now food insecure, meaning they cannot access
a nutritious diet daily. Even the most basic of staples like rice are out
of reach.
To make matters worse, sanitary pads in the country are currently taxed at 50% making
them unaffordable for many and women have no choice but to omit them in order to
afford the most basic of food items.
UN Women is on the ground working to support families in
desperate need of supplies. As a team every $100 can provide a family in Sri Lanka
with the essentials needed for a month, significantly easing the burden on
women and girls.
Each package contains a month’s worth of food items such as
rice, flour and oil as well as household goods and hygiene products – providing
welcome relief to women and their families impacted by skyrocketing
inflation.
