Story

On a night in February 2015, my mum woke up early in the morning and could not move her arms. Her husband immediately called for an ambulance and by the time it arrived she was in need of oxygen.

She was taken straight to intensive care and immediately put on a life support machine. The following morning she fell into a coma that lasted 5 weeks. When she finally woke up, she was unable to use any part of her body. After a while she could move her head and open her eyes, but she was still unable to use the rest of her body.

The doctors diagnosed her with suffering from Guillain-Barre Syndrome, this is an autoimmune disorder where your immune system attacks your peripheral nervous system. It is rare but anyone is susceptible to the syndrome. Some people are only mildly affected and it will only last a few weeks, but unfortunately, the syndrome had a severe long term effect on my mum.

She remained in intensive care until September 2015 and then moved to a Neurological Rehabilitation Hospital in Amersham where she received speech therapy and physiotherapy. She remained at the hospital in Amersham until April 2016, when she finally came home. Sadly she is now in a wheelchair and needs carers 4 times a day to help with her day to day life.

My Mum has been absolutely amazing and her determination, courage to not give up is inspiring ,I'm so proud of her.

This is why I wanted to raise money and awareness of Guillian-Barre Syndrome, Thank you for reading my mum story and for your donation.
