Story
As part of my Architecture degree, the design/build studio is raising money to support the construction of a new creche facility at Malahlela in rural South Africa. Donations will go to fully support expansion and improvement of the creche facility to ensure more children have access to early childhood education.
The crèche will be designed and built by students and we will be working with the Thusanang Trust (a South African non profit organisation whose focus is the development and well-being of the young child), as well as the current headteacher of the Malahlela Creche to ensure our design completely fits the needs of the children and teachers in the community.
South Africa has one of the biggest wealth gaps in the world as a result of the racial segregation that occurred during the Apartheid in 1948-1994. Although the laws have changed since Nelson Mandela became president, the communities are still far from equality.
We will be expanding the current nursery to increase the capacity from 6 to 30 children. Giving students access to early education will open up many opportunities for their futures and will hopefully contribute to the closing of the astonishing wealth gap.
