Story
My name is Lara and I will be taking part in The Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon to raise money and awareness for The Royal Trinity Hospice. This hospice has a very special place in my heart as is was the place my Nan was cared for during her last few weeks with us.
A little background into Nans diagnosis.
My Nan was diagnosed with a “fast acting” AML Acute Myeloid Leukaemia on the 19th January. The devastating news ripped through each of our hearts, the thought of our beloved Nan/Mum going through this and there was nothing we can do to take it away. How can it be that our beautiful Mum/Nan has cancer! 76 years young and full of life to be given this devastating news.
Nan (Josie) tried to stay positive and agreed to try Chemotherapy. 10 days later the round of Chemo was over, blood tests were taken again which showed the blood levels stayed stable however the tumours had grown. We knew this wasn’t good news. Nan decided enough was enough no more blood tests, no more bone marrow tests and no more chemotherapy, she knew ultimately this will take over her body and take her life! She made a conscious and courageous decision that the time she had left on earth would be quality time spent with her loved ones.
Nan had up and down days but there was a real noticeable difference in her once she went into The Royal Trinity Hospice on 17th February 2017. The care Nan received from all Doctors, Nurses and Volunteers at the Hospice was amazing, they really cared for her and made her feel relaxed and comfortable in her surroundings and the treatment was second to none right through to when she took her last breath. Our Nan/Mum was certainly given the “Royal” treatment for the lady she was. What makes this hospice even more amazing is the support and care they gave to me and my family through this difficult time, even when my Nan had passed away they were still there offering a helping hand with coping and grieving.
My Nan was very keen on raising money and donating to the Hospice to help in any way she could. She wants the Hospice to continue to care for others, just as she was cared for.
As an independent charity, they receive only a quarter of their funding from the government, so rely on the generosity of supporters to continue their work. They must raise £9 million every year to ensure they can provide their services free of charge to people with life-limiting illnesses and their loved ones in their community.
Any donation big or small will help to keep this fantastic Hospice providing the truly amazing care they give to it's patients. If you can't afford to make a donation then please please please like and share their Facebook/Twitter page. Not only would it be amazing to raise money for this incredible Hospice but I would really like to raise awareness and highlight the work they do.
I will keep everyone updated on my training and progress but also any events and activities which we may be holding to raise money.
Thank you for your love and support!
