Story
“We hope to raise £4,000 for research into better ways of identifying children likely to develop diseases
of the heart and circulation (cardiovascular disease). If the target is exceeded, the additional funds will be used to support the aims of the charity and help contribute to other essential projects, allowing Great Ormond Street Hospital to provide inspirational
and world-class care to hundreds of children every day. If we are not able to reach the entire target the remainder of funds required will be met by the charity.”
Better ways of monitoring children with cardiovascular conditions in kidney disease and diabetes
Cardiovascular disease (CD) is a common cause of mortality in children with diabetes or kidney disease. Although treatments for diabetes and kidney disease have improved over the last few years a significant number of children develop CD in these two conditions. Given some cardiovascular conditions are treatable there remains a pressing need to find better ways to identify which children are likely to develop CD.
Importantly, the research will also test to see if angiopoietin-2 is responsible for complications associated with cardiovascular disease, such as blood vessel calcification. Using drugs that block angiopoietin-2 may offer a new therapy for cardiovascular disease in these patients. This is an exciting possibility as drugs are already available that block angiopoietin; therefore reducing the time to establishing therapies in a clinical setting.
