Story
I'm raising money for Action Against Allergy (AAA) because I've learnt through personal experience how important their work is in raising the profile of allergies in the UK.
My eldest daughter has complex food allergies. My wife and I first found this out when she had an instant and violent reaction to formula milk. We were referred to the allergy unit at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital as a result of which we learned the full extent of her allergies, how to deal with a reaction and how to ensure she still has a healthy, balanced diet.
We have since come to realise how lucky we were to have such immediate access to great professional care. Although allergies are so much more common in the UK today than even just 20 year ago, they are still relatively little understood medically and under-represented within the NHS and Government.
AAA is one of the few organisations that seeks to challenge this imbalance. I can't stress how important is this sort of corrective. If current trends persist, we will soon all have personal experience of dealing with an allergy. The better our society understands the condition, the easier it will be for all of us to live with it.
