Story

.

Hello world! Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

If you're here, reading this, then you've probably heard that I'm running the EMF Edinburgh Marathon 2012. This will be my first marathon so I'm just hoping to finish the thing!

I have chosen to run the marathon for the charity 'Alzheimer's Scotland' in memory of my grandfather, who suffered from early-onset Alzheimer's disease and went into care on the same day that I was born.

My fundraising target for this charity is £500.

Now, I understand that a lot of people don't have a lot of spare money, at the moment. Times are tight but I would be really grateful if everyone who can afford to do so would take the time to donate just a little. The charity does some really great work, for people suffering dementia, their carers and their families. Everything we can give them allows them to do a little more.

.

(For those who don't know, here's a little bit about what Alzheimer's disease is and what Alzheimer's Scotland do...)

Alzheimer's is a strange disease, because doctors don't really know what causes it. It is characterised by a slow and progressive destruction of brain cells, leading to a decline in memory and other mental abilities. Alzheimer's disease takes away a lot of what makes an individual individual which makes it an incredibly difficult disease to deal with, both for a sufferer and their family.

Caregiving is a huge responsibility and can be exhausting, both emotionally and financially, for the caregiver. The lives of both an Alzheimer's sufferer and caregiver can be vastly improved, however, by a good support service.

Alzheimer Scotland provides such service. They run Day Centres, where sufferers can socialise and enjoy activities, under supervision, while the caregivers have a break. The charity also do home support, drop-in centres, support groups and provide numerous other services, both supportive and educational - raising awareness of this disease and the effect it has on society.

As of the last year, it is estimated that there are 33,550 people with Alzheimer’s disease in Scotland. Alzheimer Scotland can help them and their families, I can help Alzheimer Scotland, and you can help me - it's that simple.

.

Thanks to everyone who has read this far on my page. If anyone wants to know anymore about the charity, or what it does, I can recommend visiting their site; http://www.alzscot.org/.  It is pretty easy to read and very informative.

If you want to hear more about my hilarious attempt to run 26 miles, without completely breaking myself, then keep in touch on email or facebook. I'll put up some highly attractive photos of myself training, slowly destroying my knee joints and crawling over the finish line.  =)

Thanks again for your time. Hope its persuaded you to give some thought to donating.

Over and out,

Kren.
