Story
In many countries, children have limited access to education and often do not complete their studies or underachieve through lack of resources, poverty and poor health. It is estimated that 75 million children do not attend school (UNESCO), and in deprived areas, one teacher supports almost 50 children. Literacy rates are around 50% in these countries.
Across the world, it is estimated that over 100 million children (over 7% of all children) are orphaned as a result of conflict or health issues. The majority of these children are in low income settings in Africa, South Asia or South America. These are the most vulnerable children at risk of exploitation and poverty.
Humanity First aims to provide orphans with a secure upbringing and the best chance to become independent in later life. This includes looking after their health, food and lodging, education and training needs.

Ouagadougou Tailoring Training
For over a decade, Humanity First has been offering tailoring in Burkina Faso, initially in the capital Ouagadougou (Pissy and Bilbalgho), but we also had centres running elsewhere. Women are trained in basic tailoring skills, and then more advanced skills including embroidery.
Many of the women have gone on to set up small businesses with investments in sewing machines, and then employ others to make garments. One or two weer even establishing boutiques and sales outlets in North Africa, and had ambitions to grow rapidly! This has been a very successful project and a true example of empowerment of women.
