Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Whilst training for Madrid marathon last year I became very ill. From racing a 10k race on the Sunday, by the Friday I was rushed in to hospital with sepsis, swine flu and double pneumonia. My family were told that I was the ill'est person in the LRI and that I probably wouldn't make the night. After spending 2 weeks in a coma with multiple organ failure, I then went to the respiratory ward where I was told after a scan that I had an aneurysm in my heart and that I couldn't exert myself. A year on, I have finally been given the all clear (it turns out it was something I was born with) and whilst they will keep an eye on me, I can get back to doing what I love, running. And what better way to kick off my training than to raise money and awareness for a cause very close to my heart whilst running an iconic race!
For those of you that don't know, Sepsis is a life threatening condition that arises when the body's response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs. It can lead to shock, multiple organ failure and death especially if not recognised early and treated promptly.
Sepsis is more common than heart attacks and kills more people than bowel, breast and prostate cancer combined. It costs our severely stretched NHS a staggering £2.93billion a year.
Every year, 150,000 people in the UK develop sepsis. Of those, 44,000 die. A quarter of survivors – another 26,500 people – suffer life-changing disabilities, such as organ failure and amputated limbs.
Thank you so much for reading this. If you could give just a small amount to this very worthy cause, that would be absolutely amazing.
But more that that, I hope that I've made you more aware of this awful condition. Please go to http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Blood-poisoning/Pages/Introduction.aspx for more information about symptoms.
