Story
On the 7th August 2021 a group of us will be participating in the Three Peaks Challenge, where we are raising money for the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN). We are raising this money in memory of my amazing sister Gemma.
Back in 2020 pre-pandemic Gemma (34) started with slurred speech, difficulties eating and weakness in her limbs. After numerous failed appointments, Gemma was finally admitted into hospital after an A&E Visit back in April 2020. After weeks of tests and assessments our family received the devastating news that changed our lives forever..
Gemma was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease and given a couple of months / years. As a mother of 2 Gemma was adamant she was going to give the disease a good fight aiming to watch Bella start school and see Bayley go to his High school prom. This was in true light of Gemma's personality who was so strong, positive and had a get on with it attitude. In Gemma's spare time she used to spent endless amounts of time in the yard with her horse Bow and was always on the go rushing to & from places..living life to the full.
After a very short battle we sadly lost Gemma on the 1st August 2020. We was told that Gemma had a very aggressive form of MND and that it was just a case of 'bad luck' and they didn't know what had caused the disease after running genetics tests.
The reason why we have chosen this charity is because this Hospital offered Gemma immense support during her diagnosis with MND. After being transferred from Pinderfields Hospital to Sheffield Gemma was provided with the most amazing support and hope during a very dark time. And as a family we would like to provide the Research Centre with some well deserved funding to continue all the hard work they are already doing. In hope that no other family will ever have to go through this.
