News - Just in!
Due to the recent volcano, Kiri's husky trip (17th-24th April 2010) has been cancelled.
Kiri will be re-booking this trip as soon as insurance monies come through. The snow in Lapland is now beginning to melt, which means the trip will go ahead in December 2010 at the earliest and April 2011 at the latest. Please be patient for photos!
Kiri's Husky Trip
At some point in the future, Kiri will be driving a team of huskies from Norway to Sweden. The trip is 250km and will take 6 days of mushing through deep forest and rolling highlands across the Arctic. The challenge will take place beneath the beautiful Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights), and will finish at the ice hotel in Jukarssarvi.
Kiri will need to train hard to be fit for the challenge (a 14 week training programme is suggested!) She will have to look after the dogs (and help them push the sled up any steep slopes), cook for herself and set up camp. Kiri will endure 14 hour days and -20C nights.
Please visit www.kiri.blog.com for news, updates, and a more detailed itinerary.
What for?
For fun! But also for WaterAid who provide clean water, sanitation and hygiene education to the world's poorest people. The human body is 70% water. Imagine if that water was dirty. We would be sick all the time.
Here are some facts:
884 million people (about 1/8 of the population) do not have access to safe water.
5000 children die every day from diarrhoea caused by poor sanitation.
Just £15 can enable one person to access safe water, improved hygiene and sanitation.
Just £21 can pay a trained mason to help construct a well in Malawi.
WaterAid teach communities to install and maintain safe water, sanitation and hygiene facilities, so that they can be managed independently, long term, and at a permanent low cost. See more about WaterAid's activities at www.wateraid.org
