In October 2009 I was setting a good example at a pedestrian crossing on Cromwell Road in Earls Court and waiting for the green man to tell me it was safe to cross.
An out of control car crashed through the safety barriers and I was unfortunately in its path.
My rib cage was smashed to smithereeens, collapsing my lungs, lacerating my liver in three places and squashing all the things your ribs protect. My head hit the road really hard, my right hip was broken and two vertebrae in my back were shattered into rubble. Unluckily I was conscious throughout and remember tumbling along the road under the car before coming to rest lying on my stomach.
I was very lucky the London's Air Ambulance were available and arrived at my side within 7 minutes. They performed roadside surgery, reinflating my lungs, administering desperately needed pain relief, securing my poor broken body to save my spinal cord and calling in a code red for blood transfusion ahead of arriving at the Royal London Hospital.
I would have died on the side of the road that Thursday afternoon if they had not been available and after 11 months in hospital and 4 and a half years of intense therapy and a lot of hard work, I have been able to achieve a decent level of mobility.
To raise money for this vital service, I will be taking part in an abseil from the 17th floor helipad. It will be a terrifying experience, dangling over the edge, feet leaving that height and not touching anything solid until arriving at the bottom. My palms are clammy just writing about it!
Please be as generous as you are able. As the London Air Ambulance says, "we need your help. We hope you never need ours"
