Horse racing has been a passion of mine for years, and I have ridden in Amateur rider races - The Newmarket Town Plate - a few times before. Riding in the Charity race at the Cheltenham Festival in March takes things to an entirely new level and promises to be both an exhilirating and demanding experience.
Apart from having to get back to race riding fitness again, it will also involve having to shed c.30lbs / 14kgs in weight by Thursday 13th March. To this end, and starting at 13st 7lbs (189lbs / 86kgs) on January 1st this year, I have managed to shift 21lbs / 9.5kgs) as at Tues 11th Feb. It is not a lot of fun I can tell you!
As things stand I have secured a horse for the race - fingers crossed he (and me) stays sound for the next 6 weeks or so - and I ride him and another horse out every weekend as part of the training regime. Thus far this seems to be going the right way. I am on track with my weight loss, joyless as that is, so now the final obstacle is to secure the necessary fundraising for this great charity.
Cancer affects most of us in some way - my own experience was over 2 years ago when my father died of the disease - and Cancer Research UK is the country's defining charity looking to fund scientists, doctors and nurses to ultimately find a cure for over 200 different cancer types.
The fundraising target to raise is a very large amount, but I'm sure with people's generous support it can be reached and hopefully surpassed.
Any donations will be gratefully received, very much appreciated and will be going to a great cause.
I will keep you posted with updates and progress reports.
