The word dementia describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease or a series of strokes. Dementia is progressive, which means the symptoms will gradually get worse.
My grandma was diagnosed with this disease several years ago and since then I have seen my Grandma deteriorate into a shell of her former self. It became apparent to me when I would visit her and she would ask me every couple of minutes "How old are you?". It seemed as a kind of joke at the beginning but knowing someone you love is slowly forgetting who you are is a very painful experience. It not only affects me but people who have grown up around her such as my Dad and my Grandad. I applaud my Grandad for all his efforts in looking after her but it gets to a point were she has to be looked after like a baby and she has forgotten basic skills like feeding herself.
Nobody should have to go through the pain and misery that we have and lose someone we love dearly, as it feels like we have lost her altogether. I just pray that one day this disease will no longer exist and with your help find new ways to tackle dementia.
