I have decided to participate in #TheJune500 challenge to raise money for Dorset Mind, it is a local charity that educates, challenges stigma & inequality; and promotes recovery from mental health problems.
I am doing this challenge in aid of my Father Phil Smith who passed away just over 4 years ago, he was a loving family man, with a visionary work ethic and he would of appreciated the support of this charity as he navigated through his life. Men’s Suicidal rate is the highest it’s ever been over the last couple years, is the biggest killer of men in Britain between the ages of 20 and 50.
The question is where are we going wrong? Do we fear seeing the men in our lives as weak and vulnerable? Is there a problem with discussing suicide with a negative stigma attached? Is it that human compassion is something so absent? We complain about sitting in traffic rather than trying to imagine how hopeless, desperate and isolated some people are feeling? It’s probably a combination of it all, but I believe that everyone has a duty to talk to the men in their lives and let them know you will listen. Let them know that talking about suicidal feelings isn’t cowardly. Talking about your feelings is an incredible brave thing to do. Let them know there is always hope, there is always another way.
Please contribute what you can 🤞 I haven’t ran much this year, so it’s going to be a big challenge for me and I appreciate everyone’s support ❤️
