Like many families we have lost four members of the Gibbon family to cancer in recent years. We are all doing our bit and raising money for charity in a variety of ways - running the Edinburgh Marathon, swimming 250 miles during the month of May, or cycling 272 miles (or a part of the route) from John O Groats to Lundin Links over a four day period. This is all in memory of three of my uncles Harry, Robert and Derek, and their cousin Henry who all lost their battle to cancer between 2008 and 2013. 

Robert and Harry were both diagnosed with bowel cancer and sadly passed away in 2008 and 2012 respectively. Throughout this time Derek was battling his own cancer after originally being diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2005 he went into remission until 2008 when sadly secondary kidney cancer was found in his brain.  At this time he was given 18 months to live. Determined to prove the doctors wrong he battled the cancer while also taking part in a drug trial which allowed him to continue to live his life to the fullest working, sailing and spending time with his grandsons and family. 

Sadly, five years after receiving an 18 month life expectancy he passed away in 2013. A few months later his cousin Henry also lost his own battle to cancer.

To continue to fund drug trials like my family members have been involved in, and other vital preventative and therapeutic research I have chosen to raise money for Cancer Research. I hope you can make a donation however big or small to support the vital work they do in the fight again cancer.
