We fund research to stop prostate cancer killing men

Story

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, with over 40,000 new cases diagnosed every year.

The number of men dying from prostate cancer every year has for the first time overtaken the number of women dying from breast cancer making it the third biggest cancer killer in the UK.

Some 11,819 men now die from prostate cancer every year – the equivalent of one man every 45 minutes – compared to 11,442 women who die from breast cancer

Why are Keyline passionate about prostate cancer? - George Bernard

One of the Travis Perkins cornerstones is Upholding Family Values, it's with great sadness that I send this email out this morning concerning one of our colleagues.

One of our 'family members' George Bernard of Keyline Edinburgh has been diagnosed within the last week of terminal bone cancer as a result of advanced prostate cancer.  George (61) who has worked in the Edinburgh depot for over eight years, is a very popular and valued member of the team, any time you meet George he always has a laugh and a joke with you and brings a smile to your face.

At this difficult time our thoughts and prayers are with George, his wife for thirty two years, Rosalind,  his son Sean and all the staff at Keyline Edinburgh, as George now undertakes chemotherapy to manage his condition.

Keyline staff, Suppliers and Customers, venture out on their 300 mile charity cycle this week from Dumfries to Inverness in aid of Prostate Cancer, and with George's permission the team have re-named the cycle 'Pedal for People like George'.

Having had the opportunity to speak to George at the end of last week, George was delighted to be associated with the charity cycle.  George commented "If my situation and condition can raise the profile of the effects of prostate cancer, and as a result more funding can be raised for research and development to combat this cancer, then i'm delighted.  The next person could be your husband, partner, uncle or son, who knows? I'm proud and very humble that the organisers of the charity cycle have re-named the event Pedal for People like George.  If it saves one more life or prolongs the time you have with your family and friends, count me in".

George who had none of the symptoms associated with prostate cancer, and only visited his doctor in the last few months because of pains in his arms and legs, is remaining very strong and positive through his ordeal.

If you would be kind enough to help people like George, you can donate to the charity cycle - 'Pedal for People like George' by donating to our just giving page.

What are we doing? Over 300 miles in 3 Days!

Starting on Thursday 7th June 2018  our team will leave Keyline Dumfries arriving in Keyline Inverness on Saturday 9th June 2018, cycling over 300 miles...

We have a group of over thirty cyclists that are hoping to complete the three day journey (the crazy ones). As well as others who are joining us for part of the challenge doing either a day or a section of one of the routes. We have Keyline colleagues, our suppliers and our customers all cycling together for a great cause. Every mile cycled and supported by you will make a huge difference to the awareness and the funding we can raise in combating Prostate Cancer.

The plan..

Day 1 - Thursday 7th June 2018 - Keyline Dumfries to Ardrossan (approx 96 miles)

Day 2 - Friday 8th June 2018 - Ardrossan via Arran to Claonaig to Oban (approx 96 miles)

Day 3 - Saturday 9th June 2018 - Oban to Keyline Inverness (approx 108 miles)

(If you would like to join us for the whole cycle, a day of the cycle or even just part of one of the days - get in touch with us..... we would love to have you on board)
