Story
After visiting Sri Lanka, in late 2009, on a fundraising assessment visit for Epiphany Trust, I organised a Dinner in Glasgow to provide a means for the many Sri Lankans in Scotland, as well as other friends and family, to support the ground-breaking projects for street children that I visited.
The Fundraising Dinner for Homeless Children & Families in Sri Lanka is now in its 3rd year, and I am hoping to raise at least £5,000 to send to projects in Galle, Kelaniya, Kandy, Batticaloa, Kilinochchi, Blackpool Junction and Welimada. I also think that this would be match-funded by a local company, should we reach the target, so that gives me a huge incentive to appeal to you.
The projects that I visited in Sri Lanka, are run mainly by local Sri Lankans, and are so successful that they have already changed the lives and prospects of a significant number of destitute children and families. Think about it: homeless families - previously subjected to violence and abuse on the streets - now living in houses built by the Trust, with their children in school; homeless orphans, now high achievers in school, with incredible future prospects. Amazingly, some of the adults and children supported by the Trust now work for the Trust, helping us reach other vulnerable children.
I saw this with my own eyes - I played hide and seek (using my pigeon Singhala) with young children in Kandy, in one of the Trust's centres for street children. These children are happy and thriving, as a result of the work of the Trust.
However, we can do so much more, and reach many more children, with your support.
Firstly, please come to the Dinner on 4th October, in Christ the King Parish Hall, King's Park, Glasgow (7.30p.m.) - The Guest Speaker this year will be a representative of the High Commission for Sri Lanka.
Tickets are £25 (private tables of 8 available for £175).
The evening is always a great success, with a 3-Course Scottish-Themed Dinner; Professional String Quartet; and various fundraising actvities.
If you can't make the Dinner, or are otherwise touched and inspired by the cause, please donate through this page to show your support.
Thank you all.
