Story
On Wednesday 31st of August this year Seamus Hoole, (otherwise known as my minder who is under strict instructions from my wife Ali to keep me out of trouble), will be walking the Camino Frances, a pilgrimage trail some 800K from France over the Pyrenees and across northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela. We finish the walk in early October by when I will officially be an old age pensioner.
We have chosen to do the walk in an effort to raise some money and awareness of Motor Neurone Disease. In particular for my mate Dave Setters and Seamus Hooles family members who have since passed and for everyone else who is afflicted with this terrible disease.
The effect MND has on younger people and their families is clear from recent media coverage of Doddie Weir (rugby union), Rob Burrow (rugby league) and Stephen Darby (football). Their stories show the urgent need for treatments to slow progression and ultimately find a cure.
MND is a brutal disease 50% of those diagnosed with MND sadly pass away within 2 years. It takes away the ability to use your limbs, to speak, eat and ultimately, to breath. MND should not be thought of as a rare condition – the lifetime risk of getting it is 1 in 300 similar to multiple sclerosis. This means that 200,000 of the current UK population will die from MND, unless a cure is found.
“Bad things happen to good people” transmutes itself into no longer asking why something happened, but asking how we will respond, what we intend to do now that it happened.” Dave and his wife Helen who is Dave’s primary carer are prime examples of what can be done. So dig deep and donate. All funds raised will be going directly to MND research in an effort to find a cure.
