Story
Back in the summer of 2019 I set off from Lands End, UK and attempted to cycle to Cape Town, South Africa. This was all going swimmingly (apart from the heat, deserts, mountains, bad roads, flash floods, wildlife, terrible food etc.) when I was forced to fly back to the UK from northern Tanzania due to Covid. So after waiting more than two years, I am finally heading back to Africa to finish the job, “rewinding” a little to SW Uganda and picking up where I left off.
This challenge will take in the region of five months and (I think) about 7,500km on top of the 14,800km I’ve already covered.
This is a mental challenge as much as a physical one, as this time I will be on the road with only my trusty touring bike Maggie for company.
I’m fundraising for the wonderful charity Let the Children Hear, which helps Ugandan children with hearing problems by correcting said problems as early as possible, allowing the children to continue normal development. This includes screening in hospitals and schools, diagnostic testing, hearing aid fitting and speech therapy. This charity is especially important to me as I visited their clinic in Kampala on the previous trip and will visit again at the start of this one.
I am constantly amazed by how much is being done on such a small budget (about £50k per year).
