Story
Hey, thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
We know almost everyone is affected by cancer, whether they have had it themselves, through family, a friend or colleague. I just want to give a wee bit back to help support those affected and help them become a cancer survivor.
I love cycling and got back in the saddle in Sep 2009 after over 25 years of a break. I want to use this to help raise money for MacMillan Cancer Support and when I heard about Etape Caledonia 2010, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity. The event is on closed roads around Pitlochry, it is 81 miles long and you climb approximately 1900m - Ben Nevis is only 1340m high so that may give you an idea of how difficult it will be. As a further challenge I plan to complete the course in 4hr 30mins including 2 quick feed stops so will need to average 20mph - it may not sound too fast but it will mean I use over 5000 calories and remember I'm not getting any younger!
You can find out more about the actual event at : http://www.etapecaledonia.co.uk
Your support will go a huge way to help people affected by cancer, for example:
- Every £100 spent on the Macmillan Benefits Helpline helps people affected by cancer to claim £2,691 in benefits to which they are entitled.
- £184 could fund a Macmillan nurse for one day.
- £350 could pay for a much-needed convalescent break for someone with cancer and their carer.
- £769 could fund a Macmillan social worker for a working week.
- Around £60,000 could help fund a new small Macmillan information and support centre.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
I'll have to dig deep both physically and emotionally on the day so I ask that you too, please dig deep and donate now.
Oh last thing, if I reach my £200 target then my work, HSBC, will generously match the total, pound for pound, so it will make a huge difference to get there, thanks in advance for anything you can give 80)
