Kerry’s story
To give you some background I grew up in Blackpool with my parents and younger brother. My mum Lorna was diagnosed with M.S when I was 14 and sadly was in a wheelchair within 12 months of diagnosis. She was only 34 with a young family and her whole life in front of her .
Not long after, at the age of 39 my dad had a heart attack from the huge physical demands of caring for mum and us and working full time. Lucky for us he’s still with us .
Jamie and I grew up in an environment where our parents were ill, and often in hospital. I provided caring responsibilities that you shouldn’t have to as a young teenager like personal care such as putting mum on the toilet, turning her in bed etc. When I look at my teenage daughter it hits home as I couldn’t imagine her having to do this. We missed out on family holidays and doing fun things together because it just seemed impossible . It affected all our lives and there was little support. We didn’t know where to turn.
I want to raise money for a wonderful charity in my home town of Blackpool which, if this had been around when I was younger it would have changed our lives.
Blackpool Carers Centre really is a special place . It is a charity that reaches out to all carers whether those that care are young or old or indeed whether those that are cared for are young or old. It is like a lovely big blanket that wraps around the whole family to help those that care for others - whatever their age .
In memory of my lovely my mum I want to raise some money for this amazing local charity which needs our support to keep up the amazing work they do which is dependent on its volunteers .
I have some amazing friends who are going to help me have a manic summer of fundraising and I am running the great north run which will be the furthest I’ve ever run.
My mate Mullers will be by my side and her energy and craziness is contagious...... I couldn’t do this without her xx
If you can donate a few pennies that would be amazing, but also if you could share this to raise awareness of this amazing charity that would be fantastic .
thank you and lots of love
Kerry xx
