Story
Our son, George was born on 6th July 2020 with Transposition of the Great Arteries. This was detected at the 20 week scan and from 48 hours after that scan we have been supported by an incredible team of Cardiologists, from fetal cardiology experts to the surgeons at Leeds General Infirmary.
George was extremely ill from the moment he was born as he had very limited oxygenated blood. Cardiology were in the room where he was delivered in case the hole in his heart closed upon birth, unfortunately it did and they immediately performed a septostomy to save his life. We were told after 2 hours of anxious waiting that we were very fortunate to be in Leeds. If he was born in a non specialist local hosptial he would not have made an ambulance journey to Leeds.
At 8 days old he under went open heart surgery and it was the longest 10 hours of our lives whilst he was away from us. When we got to see him he was unrecognisable, a tiny baby in a sea of wires, tubes and medication. He remained sedated and ventilated.
The next 48 were incredible and as the fear and anxiety slipped away we began to see how incredible his surgery was. George had his pacing wires and machine removed followed by his chest closing and his drains. After 3 days of recovery he started to look like a baby should and left Intensive Care. One week later we went home, right in time for Daddy's birthday!
6 months on he has a faint scar, is meeting all his milestones and is the happiest chap around!!
Please help us say thank you to Cardiology for the research, training and incredible work they do.
Thank you :-)
