Story
Hello!!
I’m April 2023, I will be running the London Landmarks Half Marathon for my eldest daughter Lilly, who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in Feb 2020. Type 1 Diabetes completely turned her world upside. It requires 24/7 monitoring with no days (or nights!) off. It is absolutely relentless yet she gets up each and every day with a smile and never complains, she is my inspiration.
Having Type 1 Diabetes means Lilly is required to make so many extra decisions each day in order to try and stay as healthy as possible. She is required to carbohydrate count every item of food and drink she consumes, work out the dose of insulin she requires to cover those carbs, and the insulin pump which she has attached to her body then delivers the insulin to her. As well as her insulin pump, she wears a continuous glucose monitor. This reads her blood glucose levels every 5 minutes and alarms when her levels are either too high or too low. Both of these devices can be painful when they are changed and leave her skin red raw. Diabetes UK is a charity which has helped fund the advances in the technology which Lilly is so fortunate to have access to. She battles sleepless nights when her blood sugars are dangerously high or low throughout the early hours, yet is still expected to carry on the same as any other 11 year old at school the next day.
I am fundraising for Diabetes UK in the hope that everybody with Type 1 has access to life changing technology and so that ultimately one day soon hopefully Lilly will be able to say “I used to have Type 1 Diabetes.” We are praying for a cure.
Thank you so much in advance for donating whatever you can, it really will make a massive difference to Lilly 💙
