The grounds of Chillington Hall provide a beautiful backdrop for our 5 Km walk as we celebrate and remember our loved ones. Walk with family and friends and help us to raise funds for local people living with an incurable condition.
Moms stay at Compton was a short one but made such a difference to us as a family. Moms health was up and down for a long time. Long stays in hospital, no visiting allowed and medical updates from doctors were incredibly rare which was tough.
Eventually mom received a diagnosis of lower Oesophageal cancer, unfortunately she wasn’t strong enough to have treatment. Again, mom was in and out of hospital, covid restrictions were still in place. Finding out what was going on with mom felt almost impossible some days. The phone on the hospital ward would just ring and ring!
The palliative care team at the hospital started to get involved and communication started to improve. Mom was slowly declining, she was fortunate to secure a bed at Compton Care. Even though this was a massive blow for us as a family, going to Compton changed everything.
Mom had her own private room, staff answered the phone, she had a pretty view outside of her window, they prepared foods that mom liked and could digest, she saw the therapy dog twice a week and most of all, 2 of us could visit each day. We even took mom out in the garden one day. I can’t think of anything worse than mom being stuck in hospital, alone.
This is why we’re raising money for Compton. Mom was treated with the dignity and respect she deserved. The team couldn’t do enough for her and were a great support to us too.
