Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My husband and I are running both the Swansea Half Marathon (11 June) and the Cardiff Half Marathon (1 October) to raise money for Breast Cancer Now, a research and care charity. They provide support for anyone affected by breast cancer.
Breast Cancer Now funds almost 340 of the brightest minds in breast cancer research, discovering how we can prevent, help save lives and live well with breast cancer.
Around 55,000 women and 370 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK, with around 11,500 women and 85 men dying from this disease. That's roughly 31 each day or 1 every 45 minutes.
Through a combination of improvements in treatment and care, earlier detection via screening, including faster diagnosis, 85% of women are now surviving breast cancer for 5 years or more and this figure continues to improve, proving how vital this research is.
I have been affected personally by breast cancer as my mother has been through her own battle with the disease. When she was diagnosed, it was secondary and had already spread from her breast to lymph glands under her arm. She went through a gruelling course of chemotherapy, followed by an operation and then radiotherapy. It was a tough journey for her especially and although we supported her as much as we could it was also tough for my family and I to see her going through it all, but thankfully after completing all her treatment she recovered well.
