<p>I am a specialist nurse for children and young people with Type 1 diabetes at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. Alongside a team of healthcare professionals I currently provide nursing care for over 120 children and young people with Type 1 diabetes age under 1 to 17 years old. Each day these children and young people live their lives with finger prick blood glucose tests and insulin injections. However, this is only half the story......</p>
<p>Children with Type 1 diabetes are at continuing risk of hypoglycaemia (low blood glucose) which can lead to fitting and/or unconsciousness. They are also at continuing risk of hyperglycaemia (high blood glucose) which can lead to life-threatening diabetic ketoacidosis.</p>
<p>Families living with diabetes can never simply have 'a day off' they often struggle trying to balance blood glucose control and everyday life.</p>
<p>I am passionate about the work of the Juvinile Diabetes Research Foundation. JDRF supports children, their families and professionals. Their primary aim is to fund research to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes.</p>
