Story
The Reason: It's been 10 years this October 2022 since we lost Alanah to Pancreatic Cancer a few months after diagnosis. Alanah was larger than life, hugely generous, and much loved and tragically died aged just 60. She has been with us in spirit every single day since. To mark this milestone, I wanted to do something life- affirming which also raises money for this important charity. I started long distance road cycling in 2014 to raise money for charities, particularly PCUK with whom our family has forged a strong supportive relationship, organising several successful fundraising events over the years. I am a member of PCUK's Development Funding Board. The opportunity to cycle Coast to Coast across the USA in 2022 with several school friends proved irresistible.
The Ride: So starting from Astoria in Oregon in early July 2022 until mid September in Portsmouth New Hampshire, I will be cycling the 3500 miles/5860 km across the USA, sleeping in a large RV at nights. It should be the cycle of a lifetime, and apart from forest fires, the heat, bears, lions, snakes and saddle sores - what could possibly go wrong!?
The Cause: So why am I doing so? It’s unacceptable that more than half of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer die within 3 months. We have direct experience of that, Alanah's illness was painful and short and bewildering. Survival rates have improved enormously for most cancers, yet for pancreatic cancer, this is not the case. Pancreatic Cancer UK is dedicated to taking on this injustice using every possible means. They're supporting people with pancreatic cancer now, campaigning for change, and funding vital research to transform the future. Please help them to make the breakthroughs that people with pancreatic cancer so desperately need.
So please do what you can to support this cause, its a big target, and I'd love to blow through it. I know the work PCUK does is so worthwhile, and the money we raise together can help make a difference. Whatever you can contribute, thank you, and please circulate this link as widely as possible to others who may be interested in supporting this cause.
Thank You! As we always say "Alanah with an A!"
