My father, aged 98, died after a brief illness. I had been with him on Monday and we said goodbye. My mother and I were expecting him to leave us. Amy, Jack and I were there within a few minutes of his death as we were going around to see them anyway.

Please give generously to the Salvation Army who brought Alf into this world 98 years ago and do so much good work.

My dad did come to a few Saracens matches but he was really a Tottenham supporter, being a cockney. He was a keen cricket player and supporter of Surrey. He also came to some Jowett dinners. He gave me my love of engineering, making things and fixing things and also gardening where the large garden in Barnstaple, Devon, supported goats, chickens and rabbits as well as producing all the vegetables and fruit we needed. He also grew mushrooms in boxes in a shed. He was a quality inspector and then buyer for an engineering firm that made packing machines. But his work was only 20yds from his house for most of my childhood, so he gave lots of his time to me. He could never understand me commuting 50 miles across London to work.

Happy memories.
