Help me bring the Tolstoy challenge to an end
Friends, family and colleagues know that I've been growing this beard since the UK's first lockdown over a year ago. I've got quite attached to it (and obviously it's quite attached to me). But now my original challenger has accepted that yes, I was willing to go the full Tolstoy, so it's time to stop looking like I'm peering over a hedge.
But let's put it to good use. I will donate to Blind Veterans UK £50 per inch that comes off (and the independent jury reckons it will be five inches). Will you chip in a little too for this fantastic cause? Just a few pounds (or dollars, or euro) each from everybody reading this would quickly add up to a worthwhile amount that will make a difference.
Blind Veterans UK does amazing work rebuilding lives after sight loss, and providing the help in adjusting to blindness that former service members won't find anywhere else. When I held events raising funds for this charity 20 years ago, it was called St Dunstan's. The need for its help was steadily shrinking, as the former servicemen who had lost their sight in the wars of the 20th century were growing fewer.
That picture changed completely with the start of the UK's involvement in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere, and the decision to open up the charity to all former service members who had lost their sight, however it happened. See their website for the phenomenal work they do, and how even small donations help in changing lives.
