Story
On Saturday 19th August in Tywyn, Mid Wales, Kevin and Dewi will compete in the Race the Train Quarry Challenge to beat a steam train on the Talyllyn Railway over a distance of 10 kilometres. The Quarry Challenge course covers rough and muddy terrain, crossing fields, plunging down narrow pathways and even crossing a small stream.
Back in 19@! (let’s keep the date secret) at the tender age of 20 Kevin took part in Race the Train and won. Now somewhat further on from his 20’s Kevin wants to challenge himself again and see if he still has what it takes to beat the train. This time however he won’t be going it alone - he has convinced Dewi to join him while raising funds for Blind Veterans UK’s Llandudno Centre.
Kevin and Dewi served together with The Royal Welsh Fusiliers back in the early 1990’s where they became great friends. When they left the army it became harder to keep in contact with each other and eventually lost touch. 8 years ago they found each other via the power of Facebook and since then meet regularly with their families, who have become close.
Even though they are no longer serving with The Royal Welsh they both still have a strong desire to support the forces. Over the years both Kevin and Dewi have supported military charities such as Help for Heroes and Blind Veterans UK by taking part in sponsored events and arranging charity football matches between ex Royal Welsh Fusiliers and local Football teams in order to raise awareness and funds. Since 2013 Kevin and Dewi have become more involved with Blind Veterans UK supporting local events as marshals, getting other ex-fusiliers involved or making the tea!!!!
Kevin and Dewi want to raise as much money as possible to support Blind Veterans UK’s Llandudno Centre – a place blind veterans can come for vital support, rehabilitation and training and to access life changing equipment. Your donation will make a difference to veterans facing life beyond sight loss and be a great show of support for Kevin and Dewi in taking on this challenge.
