Hello, and thank you for visiting our page. It's really kind of you to consider giving us a wedding present, and we're even more impressed that you've managed to keep on clicking past the crockery to get to this site.
As you may know, obstetric fistula is a really distressing condition, caused by obstructed labour, and resulting in urinary and/or faecal incontinence. Although it is almost entirely preventable with good obstetric care, there are some 50,000 to 100,000 new cases a year, mainly in the developing world. In 2003, the UN Population Fund launched "The Campaign to End Fistula", with the goal of making obstetric fistula as rare in developing countries as it is in the industrialized world.
The Hamlin Fistula Hospitals are a charitable institution working towards this in Ethiopia.
Based in Addis Ababa, the main hospital provides free fistula repair surgery to approximately 1,200 women every year, cares for 35 long-term patients and trains doctors from around the world. Five further "mini-hospitals" are currently being built throughout Ethiopia to provide local fistula care and expertise. A college of midwifery is also being established to train community midwives and thus prevent obstetric fistula.
Obstetric fistula is a horrible condition with a devastating impact on women's lives. We believe that the Hamlin Fistula Hospitals are doing some very worthwhile work, with both treatment and prevention strategies. We hope you agree. If you would like to support the Hamlin Fistula Hospitals on our behalf, we would be so SO pleased. It would be a really lovely wedding present for us. And, unlike most of the things on our conventional list, it would also be impossible for Katy to break your gift...
With lots of love,
Katy and Rufus
